Time, so they say, flies… oh, if only that were true when you happen to be waiting in airport departure lounges – but it invariably seems that when you think you’ve got all the time in the world, it’s actually passing at a rate that makes light itself seem rather sluggish in comparison.
Can it really be over a month since i first blogged about SL10B? At the time, it seemed to be so far away, but now with a mere six weeks to go, i can’t help wondering where the time went. The response in terms of applications to participate has apparently been pretty incredible, with over 300 in the first week alone – i’ve taken a sneak peek at the birthday celebration regions, and by my rough and ready reckoning, using those figures the plots are over-subscribed already, so it’ll be interesting to see how things pan out.
A lot of work already appears to have taken place at the site, with progress on the main stages already evident – you can already get a feel for the broad lay of the land. Somewhat intriguing, (well, intriguing to me), is the appearance of ‘Bear Island’ – does this mean the Lindens are actually acknowledging the celebration is taking place this year? No doubt, all will be revealed in due course.
It’s a shame that we won’t be able to appreciate the impact that materials can bring to sl in this year’s celebratory builds – even if the new graphics options make it into the release viewer in time for SL10B, nobody will be able to get anything together quickly enough to showcase what’s possible. On the other hand, i think it’s entirely likely that SSAB will have been switched on, and any major bugs ironed out, in plenty of time for the big party, and it’ll be interesting to see what effect that will have – if any – on the inevitable lag-fest that besets these events. On the one hand, anything that reduces the amount of work our own machines have to do via our viewer has got to improve performance, even if only minimally; on the other hand, how the Lab’s servers will cope with with rendering the high numbers of avatars that are going to be frequenting the SL10B sims is abybody’s guess – could be interesting!
As for my own little build… well, having made a great start, inevitably the pace petered out somewhat and, if i’m completely honest, nothing noteworthy has happened for a couple of weeks. So, a good self-kicking up the rear end was required to get me back into build mode and, in the space of a couple of hours i managed to finish the bulk of the texturing, which i’d been putting off for far too long. Not much more required to be done on that aspect of the build, which means i can now concentrate on the bits and pieces that are going to go inside and which will – hopefully – do justice to this year’s theme: ‘Looking forward. Looking back’. i’ve still got around 60 prims to play with, which i reckon is more than sufficient to do everything i want to, with maybe a few left over for some final bells and whistles to finish the whole thing off. You’ll gather from the picture that the whole thing is somewhat geared around the concept of ‘time’, so it does serve to rather focus the mind on allowing plenty of that particular, precious, resource to get the job done… unfortunately, i don’t think my mind has quite got to grips with that just yet, but give me time!
All in all, i’m pretty pleased with the way that things are progressing and i’m starting to get just a little bit excited about what’s to come – i just hope i’m ready for it!
