Alt. life: Seventeen Across

I used to know a person who, when trying to understand where other people were ‘coming from’, would invariably rely on the principle of ‘walk a mile in my shoes’. Rather than judge, they would instead consider that other person’s circumstances through looking at life from their perspective.

I think it’s a principle that doesn’t only assist in situations when we might find ourselves the unwilling recipient of what we might consider bad behaviour, (and there are quite definitely occasions when, people are plain out of order), but it can also help us to understand the world in which we live. There are a multitude of scenarios, situations and circumstances that people around me experience that I never have myself, but I’ve often sought to understand how life can affect people by trying to put myself in their place… Walk in their shoes.

Of course, I can’t know whether I succeed, but if nothing else, I’ve learned to appreciate that my experience is not the only one that is valid.

Recently I wrote a piece that took me way outside my comfort zone, but it was a way of exploring experience. I don’t know how accurate it is, maybe some of you will have greater insight into it than me?

You’ll stumble in my footsteps
Keep the same appointments I kept
If you try walking in my shoes
